Effects of Eating Nuts on Brain Health
Dr. Maya Roseman explains the benefits of consuming walnuts, almonds, and other nuts in our diet.
It’s well-known that nuts are great for you because they don’t make your blood sugar spike and they’re packed with healthy fats and important nutrients like zinc, magnesium, calcium, and iron. They’re also rich in good-quality proteins, making them superfoods.
In a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers looked at what happens when people eat a mix of nuts every day. For four months, one group ate a small amount of mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, cashews, and almonds), while another group didn’t.
After just four months, the people who ate the nuts showed big improvements in blood flow to their brains, how their brains reacted to insulin, and their cognitive function (how well their brains worked). This suggests that eating a variety of nuts regularly isn’t just good for your heart and preventing diabetes, but also for keeping your brain healthy.
